Title: New Years Resolutions Description: Cassandra and Spunky are dueling dummies. Date: 1982 Comments: This bit comes from the end of 1982 and I believe Craig Dingle wrote it. The basic idea here—two ventriloquists (Ladmo & me) whose puppets quarrel—is very similar to the premise pitched to me in the mid-90s for a possible network TV show of my own by Jim McCawley, the former talent coordinator of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. We first met in the mid-80s when he was judging a talent contest I won at a comedy club in Phoenix. It was after we met again in 1993 on the set of Vicki Lawrence’s show (where he was the supervising producer) that he contacted me about doing a sitcom about two ventriloquist best friends whose puppets can’t stand each other. Alas, the project never made it past the development stage and nothing ever came of it. Probably because sustaining it would have been tough. Nevertheless, the idea of pugilistic puppets is a good one and, as a single sketch, sustains just long enough to kickoff the New Year. Here’s to a great ’08! Dan Horn 2007 |
