Wallace-Is-Fat Routine #1

Title: Wallace-Is-Fat Routine #1

Description: It’s Orson’s firstWallace-Is-Fatbit.

Date: 1982

Comments:

Back when we were doing the show, occasionally someone would ask me if Wallace minded all of Orson’s “fat” jokes.  I used to answer paraphrasing one of Wall’s favorite responses, “Mind ‘em?  He wrote ‘em!”  (Wallace would often answer questions with a quip like this.  For instance if you asked him if he saw such-n-such movie he’d reply, “See it? I wrote it!” or “See it?  I was in it!”)  The truth is Wallace wrote this first bit, which led to subsequent ones I wrote with his blessing.  Today they seem politically incorrect, but back then Wallace thought they were funny and harmless since he was the target.  You can tell in this clip that I was not completely comfortable with the teleprompter yet, and I was genuinely having a great deal of trouble getting Orson into the suitcase because of his arm rods.  Watching this now, my mind fills with lots of things I wish I had done differently.  However, at the end of the bit Wallace seems truly amused, so I guess I’m content to have at least found favor with the boss.
