By December of 1982, Steven Spielberg’s E.T. (released the previous June) had grown into a major cultural and marketing phenomenon.  E.T. himself seemed to be everywhere and E.T. inspired merchandise flooded the markets—from E.T. toys and games to E.T. books and bubble bath.  That’s where the idea came from for this bit about Polly’s own line of retail goods.
